A Cup of Coffee a Day… …Will Keep the Doctor Away!

Good news for all coffee aficionados, studies have shown that the caffeine content in coffee have several properties that can benefit one’s health. Medically known as trimethylxanthine, caffeine is used as a cardiac stimulant (to stimulate the heart to pump blood), as a mild diuretic (to aid in urination), and as a bronchodilator (especially for asthmatic individuals, caffeine can open up the lungs). Recreationally it is used to provide a boost of energy by tricking the nerve cells to take it instead of adenosine (the nucleoside responsible for sleep), hence the stimulation. Aside from improving mental performance and elevating mood, drinking coffee has other benefits too. Isn’t it good to be caffeinated?

Coffee has more fiber than orange juice and has antioxidants too. It keeps our mouth moist, thus avoiding xerostomia (dry mouth). There have been studies conducted showing that coffee appears to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart diseases, Diabetes Mellitus type 2 and liver cirrhosis. In one of these studies, it was found out that of the 193,000 people who consumed more than six or seven cups every day were 35% less likely to have type 2 diabetes. Having lesser chances of acquiring type 2 Diabetes will also lessen the possible occurrence of a heart disease, since the two are closely related to each other. In addition, in a study including 83,700 people, it was found out that those who were drinking more than 2 cups of joe per day has a 20% lower risk of having stroke in their lifetime. Another study that included 1,400 people who were drinking 3 to 5 cups of coffee per day, were monitored for 20 years and resulted in a 65% less chance of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. To keep oneself aware, the normal caffeine consumption should only be 250 mg or 2 ½ cups a day. A single cup of coffee (around 7 oz) offers the following caffeine content:

Drip coffee: 115 – 175 mg
Espresso: 100 mg
Brewed: 80 – 135 mg
Instant: 65 – 100 mg
Decaf brewed: 3-4 mg
Decaf instant: 2-3 mg

But take note that coffee isn’t the only beverage that has caffeine. Tea, carbonated drinks, and chocolates have caffeine as well. As you enjoy that Venti Caramel Macchiato of yours, think of all the health benefits that you are getting.
