On a sunny Saturday afternoon I had a great girl talk with UAE based fashion designer Reema Albanna. I was impressed by her oustanding and fun designs that bring some fresh air to Dubai fashion. As I was very curious to know more about her label, Reemami, she nicely answered my questions.
What are the challenges that you face as an emerging designer in Dubai ?
In fashion you need to be very fast and give a lot of attention to details. The finishing is very important because it reveals the quality of your pieces. This industry is very fast paced that is why you need to have a good back up such as good suppliers for example. Dubai offers opportunities to young designers but you have to work hard for them.
How do you maintain your level of creativity up ?
I do not follow trends but I always try to be different and I think that is what helps me to stay creative. Choosing to be different usually leads to create more and explore new designs.
Would you say that people from the Fashion industry in Dubai are accessible ?
The buyers are not so hard to access, now for all the PR aspects, I would say that the fashion editors from big magazines are rather difficult to get in touch with.
Do you think that Middle Eastern Fashion can compete with European Fashion ?
For ready to wear , definitely. Our standards are getting higher and the fact that Dubai is an exposed city is very helpful as it encourages designers to meet a high level.
Who are your favourite designers ?
I love Lanvin, Balenciaga, Balmain and Chloe.
What advice would you give to someone that would like to start a fashion line ?
I would say, just do it! Don’t think to much about it and go ahead.
Last but no least, describe your style in 5 words ?
Fun, playful, funky, daring and stylish.
