1. The Blazer
A blazer in black, grey or camel is the perfect cover up which can be worn both day and night, with jeans and a tee for trendy casual wear, with a blouse and tailored trousers for a smart and polished office look, or with an embellished top and skirt or trousers for a glamorous evening outfit.
Your blazer should be not so short that it looks like a bolero, but not so long that it looks like a man’s dinner jacket. It should rest nicely on your bottom or just below it.
One style tip to take from the guys? Either keep your blazer open, or with two buttons done up, but never fully buttoned up. You are not a butler.
2. The Scarf
If you wear your sheila wrapped around the back of your head and ears Sheikha Moza or “Spanish” style, wearing a long scarf around your neck, with the two tails hanging down on the inside of a blazer, jacket or cardigan is a fashionable way to cover up your neck and bust. Floral prints, animal print and arty digital prints are hot right now.
All the celebs are covering up with one, so why don’t you give it a try…
3. The Maxi Skirt
The maxi is going nowhere for a very long time – long hemlines are back in. Hence it is worthwhile to invest in a plain maxi skirt, preferably in black as it will go with everything. This is another staple piece which can be taken from day to night. Team your maxi skirt with a long sleeved tee or blouse with flats or wedges for a casual daytime look, and then with a sparkly embellished top and boots or gold gladiators for the night. High heels and maxi skirts equal not such a great look as the proportions do not look right.
4. The Harem Trouser
Owning a pair of harem trousers is an investment because they are always coming in and out of fashion, and their loose fit is perfect for Hijab wearers who want to keep their legs looking both modest and stylish.
5. The White Shirt
As I showed you in a previous post, every woman, Hijab wearer or not, should own at least one white shirt because it can be pulled off in so many different ways. Make sure your white shirt is reasonably long, loose and not sheer.
6. The Legging
It goes without saying that leggings are the answer for Hijab wearers who want to wear that tunic or dress which is just not long enough. Keep leggings in plain dark or neutral colours. Leggings in bright colours + Hijab = tacky.
7. The Plaid Shirt
Love it or loathe it, plaid always has a place in fashion. Like the white shirt, a plaid shirt can be pulled off in numerous ways, whether worn open over a tee like a light jacket, or worn buttoned up and belted like a tunic. Again, opt for a relatively long shirt which reaches just below your bottom.
8. The Silk Oversized Blouse
A silk oversized blouse looks polished and sophisticated and is a go-to look when you are stuck over what to wear. You can wear yours with jeans, leggings or trousers. Just make sure it is relatively long and not sheer.
9. The Kaftan
The kaftan was made for the Hijabi – light, long, loose and totally in sync with Middle Eastern culture, as well as always in fashion when the ethnic, tribal or bohemian look is on trend (which is almost always). Your kaftan can be floor-length or shorter, (if shorter wear with leggings), and flats, sandals or gladiators for soft, poetic and breezy look.
10. The Long-Sleeved Monochrome Shift Dress
Whether in black, white, navy, red or in two-tone colour, a long-sleeved monochrome shift dress in classic colours ticks so many trend boxes: the ’60s look, monochrome, minimalism, block colour and Parisian chic, and so it can be brought out of your wardrobe and worn again and again.
